Early Adolescents have unique spiritual needs. Belonging--to a family, to a group of friends, and to an active church community--is how middle school kids find meaning in their lives.
Kids this age are smart, capable, and competent. They want real answers to hard questions. They have the capability of a deep awareness and connection to God. They need a judgement-free zone where they can be themselves, explore their faith, and get to know Jesus as their true friend and brother.
Our middle school program offers our kids in grades 5-8 such a place. Our small group approach provides social support, personal spiritual growth, and an opportuntity to serve others. Students will explore the foundations of Catholic teaching, experiment with many forms of prayer, and have some fun doing community building activities designed for this age group. (Full disclosure. This is sometimes very messy, silly, and loud!!!)
In the Spring of 2024, the Archdiocese of Boston announced that they would lower the age for the reception of Confirmation to 14 or 8th grade. What does this mean for your family? It means that beginning in 7th grade, your child will begin to prepare to celebrate Confirmation, with the intention of receiving the sacrament in the spring of 8th grade.
While this represents a change to how our faith formation program is structured, we are excited to engage our 7th and 8th graders at the stage when they may have the most questions!
A typical path starting in Fall of 2024 will be for a 7th grader to enroll in Confirmation 1 and then to continue into Confirmation 2 the following year. Both Confirmation 1 and 2 should be completed prior to Confirmation, regardless of the grade the candidate begins.
